Gary Le Strange on ‘Loose Lips’

Living TV, 2003

This clip was recorded on October 22nd, 2003, the day before my 32nd birthday, and broadcast on October 24th, making it Gary Le Strange’s first ever bona fide TV appearance. Part of a daytime series called Loose Lips on Living TV, presented by Richard Arnold and Melinda Messenger, this particular instalment was an “eighties special” starring Tony Hadley (of Spandau Ballet fame) and Peter Cox (from Go West), both of whom had recently rediscovered fame on the reality show Reborn in the USA. My wife and I didn’t have cable or satellite at the time so we had to ask our neighbour Ian to tape it for us. Glad we did too because this turned out to be Gary Le Strange’s only TV interview. There were no rehearsals, so most of the rubbish I spout here is taken from my stage act. The “guess the lyric” bit was thrown at me out of the blue - note my instant stubborn reluctance to sing and my character-breaking smirk when I finally say something vaguely amusing. All I can add is, Tony Hadley has the biggest hands I’ve ever shaken and Melinda Messenger was incredibly sweet. Went straight from this to a sell-out show at the Soho Theatre, so it was probably the most successful day of my entire career.
