The very first live performance of Shut Up Mum, at an electronic band night organised by Johnny Normal at The Islington on Tolpuddle Street. The song is a mess - I clearly don’t know the words and I don’t have the stamina to sing them - but the intro offers a window into a promising new version of Gary: stupider, edgier, more bumbling, more personal, far less clipped and professional. If I’d carried on doing the act, I probably would have leaned into this big time. As it turned out, this would be one of only a handful of gigs I did that year, before hanging up Gary’s PVC stockings, apparently for good. The video has breaks in it, which I’ve tried to smooth over with captions and audio, but hopefully this won’t kill it for you.
