Another clip from Club Le Strange, courtesy of Mandy Jones, this time of me singing Black Doll Man. One of the first songs I wrote for Beef Scarecrow, it was primarily inspired by David Sylvian and Japan, but still felt like a decisive step way from the overtly electronic, New Romantic stuff Gary had been doing up to this point, the harsh synth tones and dry drum machines replaced with funky live drum loops. Sadly it’s ended up being one of the most obscure songs in Gary’s back catalogue but, although it didn’t make the final cut of the album, I sang it at three times at Club Le Strange, so I was definitely into it at the time. This turned out to be the very last edition of Club Le Strange, as I retreated into the studio to finish his divisive masterpiece.
