I hated this at the time. No one likes to be told their live show is only semi-good on national television and, obviously, it was frustrating not to wow Stuart Maconie 100%. But watching it again now, I do realise he’s still saying nice things about it and, to be honest, if I were to watch my 2004 Edinburgh show again now, I’d probably agree with him. I put way more effort into the music than into the spoken material. As Kirsty Wark says about this brief clip of The Outsider (specially filmed for Newsnight Review), there are “more references than a Tarantino film” - a quote I should have used on all future publicity. But in the end, I didn’t want the audience to just sit there counting cultural references all night, and tried a different approach for my next effort.
