Another week, another page from The Story of Nelson - this time with a half-finished picture that a caption helpfully tells me isn’t even supposed to be here. Having now found a cheap old copy of the Ladybird book in question on ebay, I can safely say it’s supposed to be a picture of the 15-year-old Nelson climbing up the rigging of the HMS Carcass on an Arctic background. Instead I’ve drawn what looks to be some kind of cross between King Kong and Dave Lee Travis hanging off the side of a climbing frame.

Ward’s 7 John Ward and his band of rebels fight the evil Federation
The text immediately tries to burst my class bubble from the previous chapter by informing me that Nelson wasn’t the snooty officer I expected him to be and rose up through the ranks, spending his childhood getting down and dirty with the rest of the powder monkeys. It even tells me that Nelson never forgot this and did every single little thing in his power to make life comfortable and safe for everyone that ever served under him forever, because he was amazing. But I say his Uncle was still Comptroller of the Royal Navy and helped him skip a rank or two. So forgive me my remaining scepticism. I just see it as my duty to ask questions, and surely England expects me to do that.
